Fūdo in Motion: Walking, Multimodality, and the Teaching of Tourism (Johan Edelheim)

The Teaching Tourism Walking (TeToWa) series reimagines academic gatherings by moving them outdoors. Beginning with a conference in 2024 and followed by five workshops across Japan in 2025, TeToWa rejects the confinement of hotels and campuses, instead situating discussions along planned walking routes. The series foregrounds multimodality and multiliteracies, recognising that knowledge is not only expressed in texts but also embodied: in soundscapes, scents, tastes, movements, and spaces. For tourism educators and professionals, this expands how learning activities and coaching sessions can be designed—attending both to diverse learner preferences and to the competencies required to interpret meaning conveyed through multiple modes simultaneously. TeToWa also insists that places are never neutral backdrops.
